Fenixpunk 08-08-2005 02:15 PM

Exploited - Punks Not Dead (out of all their songs, i cant believe this the one most people mention)

sleepy jack 08-08-2005 02:19 PM

I won't debate you on the songs I think are great (coughQueencough) but November Rain and Everybody Hurts? I mean, yeah those songs are trash, but I would nver say that is their most popular song.

How about Losing My Religeon and Welcome to the Jungle. I'd assign those.

Sabbath is a toss up, non-rock fans don't know it, but I'd bet they would have at least heard of Iron man.

Fenixpunk 08-08-2005 02:26 PM

ya, i think jungle is more popular than november rain, and Iron Man is probably more popular than paranoid ...

REM though...what about shiny happy people? that song gets on my nerves and for some reason is the song that comes to mind when i hear ppl mention REM.

Josephine 08-08-2005 02:27 PM

Oasis - Wonderwall (*Uhrgh* I hate it)
Guns 'n Roses - Knocking On Heaven's Door
Deep Purple - Smoke On The Water

Urban Hat€monger ? 08-08-2005 02:28 PM

I`m mostly going by songs I hear on crappy local radio.

If they play guns n roses it`s ALWAYS November Rain , If they play REM it`s ALWAYS Everybody hurts ....and so on & so on

ThePinkNightmare 08-08-2005 04:49 PM

i agree with shiny happy people and bloody wonderwall!!!!! hate them both!

i like all those songs, 'specially the rem and queen ones

SATCHMO 08-09-2005 11:28 AM

Prince- even if you've heard everything that has he has released on Sony records during the bulk of his career in the 80's and 90's you might still not have any idea who he actually is and what he's capable of.

_Spinning_ 08-09-2005 04:35 PM

I dare not insult any band.
But Everybody hurts - R.E.M is sh!t

Imonlydancing 08-09-2005 04:40 PM

^Well, you obviously haven't seen it live. 'mazing.
Also, Nirvana - smells like teen spirit, not the best off Nevermind by far, yet everyone loves it and its the most played one. even Dave grohl said it himself.
oh, and the killers, smile like you mean it. HATE IT. the first song released off that album, 'Jenny was a friend of mine' noone seemed to like, but mmh. yeah.

Urban Hat€monger ? 08-09-2005 04:44 PM

I saw REM play it live

Still hate it

Imonlydancing 08-09-2005 04:54 PM

and, Urban, what did you think of them live?

Urban Hat€monger ? 08-09-2005 04:59 PM

They were rather good

A bit more older material would have been nice though

Well in the case of Bohemian Rhapsody I guess you could say it`s down to having it forced down my thoat by people with no taste telling me how much of a 'classic' it is over the past 30 years.

And November Rain is just overproduced self indulgent tripe

Bump

sweet_nothing 11-28-2008 01:03 PM

Blur- Song 2
Gorillaz- Clint Eastwood
Nirvana- Smells Like Teen Spirit
Oasis- Wonderwall
Radiohead- Creep

WaspStar 11-28-2008 02:55 PM

Kudos to anyone who nominated Everybody Hurts (wtf?) and Wonderwall (the reason I don't blame people for hating Oasis).

But I don't think there are really many cases where the band's best known song is also its worst. Sure, we hate them because they're overplayed and medicore, but there are some REM songs worse than Everybody Hurts (not by much, but they are worse) and Smells Like Teen Spirit isn't quite as awful as some of the junk on Nevermind.

For that reason, I can't nominate Satisfaction or Rock The Casbah or Hey Jude or even Sounds Of Silence.

One that comes very close, though, is Marquee Moon. If it wasn't for The Dream's Dream and Little Johnny Jewel, this would be the worst Television song by a country mile.

Another one is Be My Baby. The Ronettes (and Phil Spector) had so many truly great pop tracks (Do I Love You?, Born To Be Together, Walking In The Rain), and this awful piece of fluff is their best known? If it wasn't for So Young, this would be a shoe-in.

khfreek 11-28-2008 03:02 PM

I love Creep, Wonderwall, and Bohemian Rhapsody, so poor me <.<

Besides Paranoid, I also nominate Iron Man for Black Sabbath. It's ok, but they have so many better songs, even on the same album.

Also

Smoke on the Water - Deep Purple
More Than a Feeling - Boston

Not their worst songs, but pretty bad ones that are the only songs in their discography that see the light of day on radio stations (and few stations play them, at that).

dac 11-28-2008 03:23 PM

What's all the hate for Wonderwall for? Yeah it's overplayed, but it's by no means a BAD song.

Anyways, I can't believe no one has mentioned Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2...

Mmm, I'd agree there - there are a fair few 'most popular songs' that are mediocre on the scale of things, but very few that are their worst.

Though I still think Rock the Casbah is one of the best Clash songs. I think a better candidate would be Should I Stay or Should I Go... I never understood everyone's fascination with that song when the majority of the songs on London Calling are better. Still, it's not a bad song and there's much worse in their discography too, mainly from that unmentionable 1985 album of theirs. :D

And I still think Sounds of Silence and the Boxer are some of the best S&G songs. Though I will say that they're sadly overlooked - I don't think many people realise just how good they were, and that they stretched far beyond their singles.

Actually, I hated Wonderwall long before I knew it was considered a good song, or even that it was overplayed. It kept me from checking out WTSMG for a long time.

Even excluding Cut The Crap, there's enough junk on Give 'Em Enough Rope and London Calling that I wouldn't be able to call Casbah (or the almost-as-bad SISOSIG) the worst Clash song.

Well if someone puts on Wonderwall at a party or something you won't hear me complaining ;)

FaSho 11-28-2008 04:00 PM

Only because I'll be complaining louder then you. ;)

Bulldog 11-28-2008 04:05 PM

i think David Bowie's 'Let's Dance' deserves a mention (even if it's bands we're talking about). I've just never really liked it. Not his worst by a long shot (which I know is the point of the thread) but as we all know he's done much, much better

sweet_nothing 11-28-2008 04:18 PM

For someone who claims to be such a Smiths fan Noel Gallagher writes some pretty emotionally devoid songs, Wonderwall being one of them. Though I do enjoy playing it on guitar, it really gets the girls attention. ;)

Oh I definitely agree! I love Bowie but to be honest that song desperately annoys me.
